Kacey Musgraves has become something of a country phenomenon. It has been a little over a year since the artist released her debut album Same Trailer Different Park, featuring number one single Merry Go Round, and last night Musgraves performed her first ever headlining London show. It was the last night of the UK leg of Same Trailer Different Tour, and pink flamingos decorate the stage, a nod to her affinity with trailer parks, and even opens the show with The Trailer Song.
The singer dominates the stage with her lilting vocals and catchy lyrics, and seemed genuinely humbled as the audience sang along with every word. It is Kacey Musgraves’ songs that set her apart. Her clever lyrics shone through, and she had carefully chosen songs that best highlight her songwriting talent. Alongside a selection of songs from her album, she also sang Mama’s Broken Heart, a song penned by Musgraves, made famous by Miranda Lambert.
She presented the perfect mix of songs, and this range of speed and dynamics kept the audience excited and expectant. The covers she chose were incredibly diverse, from Weezer’s Island in the Sun, to Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ I Put a Spell on You, and she made each and every cover her own. The band ensure that the music hints at the country genre, often the mere presence of the banjo differentiates the band’s sound from being labeled as pop.
Kacey Musgraves’ encore left the audience on a high. Her final song, and new single, Follow Your Arrow is set to be the next country anthem. A simple song, that began as a poem to a friend, conveys the message that you should be yourself, and the big sing-a-long chorus was the perfect end to the show. Although the song may be somewhat controversial- ‘kiss lots of boys, or kiss lots of girls, if that’s what your into,’ the song’s message is uplifting, and hopeful, and was a wonderful parting wish for London.
Musgraves clearly has a large, loyal fan base in this country, and her first headlining show in London will surely not be her last. Her sheer talent of both writing and performing songs with such conviction creates a bond with the audience. Kacey Musgraves is an artist at the beginning of a long and promising career, and appears to be a strong advocate for UK country music.
